Subdirectories or subdomains?
It has been my experience that subdirectories are better to use than subdomains.
Subdomains are better to use if you have a great homepage filled with content and still enough room to make a subdomain. It's better to use them as if you're building a new site. Like mtv.com and dance.mtv.com. MTV.com is dedicated to everything MTV. Dance.MTV.com is dedicated to everything about America's Best Dance Crew, a show on MTV, and it has their own pages. Promoting a subdomain for SERPs, etc. would be like promoting a whole other site.
When I use subdirectories instead, I get better SERPs results just by using a unique first paragraph of content, header tag, and title tag/description/keywords tags.
Think of it like this: Would you rather be promoting a site or a page?
What has been your results when using subdomains and subdirectories?
