Link Building
If you're asking webmasters for reciprocate links, make sure to put their link on your site prior to do so. It's hard to get a webmaster to say yes but it's harder for them to say no if you already have their link up. Be sure to provide them with as much information as possible. Include your anchor text, URL and the placement of their link.
When selecting a webmaster to contact, make sure they have a links, partners, sponsors or affiliates page. Examine the type of sites the site is linking to. If it's relevant to yours, follow through on contacting them. Also, make sure the site you're looking at is related but NOT a competitor of your site. Not only should the site you're linking to be relevant but make sure the content and keywords are as well.
To acquire more links and have more webmasters contacting YOU, make separate link pages for different categories, similar to a directory but not as cluttered. If you have a general website with many topics, this is perfect for you. Instead of having your travel and real estate links on one page, put your travel sites in your "Travel Resources" page and your real estate sites in your "Real Estate Resources" page. This way the links are more relevant and you have less of a chance of being penalized in the search engines.
Search engines have a certain algorithm that they use to determine what sites rank where. If you have a lot of relevant backlinks you have a better chance of ranking high in the search engines and the higher you rank in the search engines, the more traffic you get.
Link building usually takes up to 30+ hours of your time per month. It's worth the time though. If you're not willing or able to spend all of that time on building links for your website, you can always hire a link building service. There are many out there. How do you find them? Google is your friend!
