To be honest, I really don't like sites that go over the top with layout images, even if it does make it look a little nicer, there's still the matter that it's so damn slow and cluttered. I mean, the layout for this place is pretty balanced between tables and images. But somewhere like, I dunno, DrunkDuck, is a bit nasty since every other thing is an image on there :/

I totally agree. "Tastefully" simple I would add. Look at Google! Direct, to the point and easy to figure out. But don't mistake simple for boring. Be creative and simple and make it easy.
Coming from an automotive design background, there is an old saying when it comes to designing anything mechanical: "Keep it simple stupid!" I guess that applies to everything creative and marketable.
