What do you think is the best free forum software out there? For attracting visitors I think vbulletin of course, but what about the free ones?

Personally I think the best free one is myBB. Its soo much like vBulletin I just find it to be a great alternative.

MyBB is a great software if you're familiar with it and how it's made. If you'll need support, etc. then I suggest phpBB.

I use phpBB and yes it works but I am not very satisfied with it. No special reason, just need to change. MyBB will be it when theres a converter available.

But vBulletin is my goal someday.

As far as i seen most of free forum software has a very slow development time. Same as for most of open source projects.

phpBB is crap in my opinion, and i tried to look myself for some good alternatives, but didn't find one until now.

Anyway, if you're looking for my opinion, vBulletin is also a bit crappy because their own architecture is somehow into 2002 ages, and also lot of things may be re-worked for giving a boost on speed (too much CPU consumption due to extensive use on MySQL).

There is a converter available. It's been out for a while.

Personally I'm going with PHPbb. I don't know about other forum softwares, like SMF, but PHPbb is normally the one I use, if I'm creating a community..
