Links are links. The fact that it is from a free site does not make it worthless, however, depending on the popularity, trustworthiness and other factors related to the site your getting the link from, it may or may not be of value. I've seen PR6 pages hosted on geocities.com (free) that were personal home pages of Doctors that had been around since 1996 and had thousands of very good backlinks. I guarantee you links from those sites are quite valuable, free host and all. That said, most stuff hosted on free accounts is crap, and links from crap are generally not all that valuable.
